The question of what being human means has been a dilemma for a very long time and has held humans in awe for millenia. It has spurred us into great actions which have translated on our historical timeline as both disaster and progress; with our species successfully hovering above the food and power chain of the planet. A quick retrospective reflection on our origin and a curious peer through this historical cloud of knowledge into the future reveals one thing: we are slowly but surely unraveling who we are on the sands of time. Being human for now, is not an answer glaringly carved into a rock. By living our lives, we discover who we really are; beasts or guardians of the world; we decide. Let it be clearly declared at this point that it is beyond the capability of any single being to completely demonstrate humanness. Being human is a virtue we must weave out together while upholding the obligation to unravel the beautiful corolla of peace, empathy, love and the sheer willingness to stick together through the vortex that life inevitably pulls us through.
As humans occupied with foraging the planet for physiological and emotional satisfaction, it is easy to become preocuppied with these needs that we enclose ourselves in the narrow societal circles that provide the secure stockpiles of these needs. We could thereby ignore the beautiful light of life that summons us beyond the comfort of the social and environmental circles we are familiar and feel comfortable with. Simply put, we may not realize if we are engaged in life as responsible custodians of its ecosystem or as disengaged foragers. We will always hold within our hands, the keys to ensuring that life is pleasantly enriching for every one as an individual and in the different communities in which we have organized ourselves over millenia. We have the capacity to effortlessly share not just ideological hope and love, but to feel sympathy and to douse pain by ensuring that we can provide our physical needs without unduly harming the planet. Beyond the the innumerable surprises that our conduct often result in, which of course makes for life’s spices and entertaining adventures, this may be what it means to be human.
Events in our development and trajectory have made us almost enchanted with our personal experience of what being human means that we fail to realize that this experience has diverged into an even richer one of collectively sharing and enjoying the natural endowment of belonging to arguably the most successful species on earth. Are we more human when our ego fuels our desires to engage in wars; and ignore hunger and squalor or are we more humans when compassion drives us into service that upholds the dignity and sanctity of all life? Is the goal of being human to protect our culture from each other or to promote and share cultural diversity? These are not easy questions to answer. Now, more than any other time in our history, we are at the threshold of victory for humanity. We must press forward together holding hands into the liberation of enlightement or dwell in the obscurity of our ignorance. We hope that we can all enjoy and share the universal experience of being human.
Although the natural environment where we live may seem to be reined in by the laws of nature, they are in fact fashioned by the workings of the human mind. This part of our being is the birth place of disaster and of the finest forms of virtues. It is from here that we decide how we treat various life forms on the planet, how we react to environmental pollution or whether we are the engineers of conflict or the emissaries of peace. We believe that every individual is in control of their mind’s offsprings and we strongly hope that beauty in the world and the appreciation of life will continously flourish because we should take responsibility for what is ours.
Humanity spring is here for us to enjoy a community where we can celebrate and promote the triumphs of human ingenuity and inspire ourselves to take action that makes existence on all planes even more enriching, sustainable and peaceful; everywhere, for all life, always.
